FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Each session is run in a group of a maximum of 8 people. You will have access to all studio facilities and full support from our technician who will always be in the studio to assist you.

  • Kindly note that this course is untaught. Please only book this course if you have been taking classes at Ceramics Sculpture Studio at a beginner - Intermediate level or contact the studio to discuss your experience. If you feel confident working unsupported and you are familiar with the good studio practice, want to practice more and refine your pottery throwing or hand-building techniques we suggest you sign up for this course. Please allow at least 20 minutes before the end of each session to clean up your tools and your working area.

  • We are encouraging students to bring their own apron. We have plenty of tools at the studio to offer you, but if you would like to bring and use your own favourite tools you are more than welcome to do so. Kindly note that you will not be able to store your apron or your toolbox at the studio so you need to take them away with you at the end of each session. You will work with clay so it will get messy, please wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We also advise you to tie your hair back and cut your nails short. Please do not wear jewellery like rings, bracelets or watches during this course as the clay may get into bits where it cannot be easily cleaned or they may get scratched.

  • This course is all about practice, improving and making. You will be able to make a considerable amount of work in nine weeks. You will be able to keep your best 15 pieces of your work made at this course. If you want to keep more than that, you will be charged £5 per artwork (- mug size, the fee will vary, depending upon artwork size). Please note that all your artwork made at this course must be a bonedry stage by the end of week 8 for the bisque firing. You are going to glaze all your artwork on week 9.

  • It may take up to 3 weeks or more until you can actually collect your artwork. When your artwork will be ready for collection you will be notified by email. Kindly note that we will only keep hold of your artwork made at this course for no more than 14 days after artwork collection email confirmation. You must claim and collect your artwork within this time frame, otherwise, it will all be donated to our local charity.

  • You are going to use a plastic, smooth Pale Buff stoneware clay. This clay body recipe is a blend of selected low iron clays providing an ideal background for a sculptural and decorative approach to stoneware ceramics. Silica sand makes it excellent for throwing on the pottery wheel too. This clay firing range is 1120°C - 1280°C.

  • For health and safety reasons and to minimise the firing costs you will not be allowed to bring any other types of clay bodies or glazes or any other materials to the studio. We have a great variety of glazes for you to choose from at the studio.

  • Food and drinks should never be consumed in the studio. Avoid creating dust at all times when preparing work or when cleaning up. You should never sand your artwork in the studio. Sanding must be done in our garden and you should wear a safety mask (face respirator). You should always be aware of our fire safety evacuation procedure.

Each student should take the time to clean her/his tools, equipment used and working area before leaving the studio.

  • Please choose the right dates to join this course. We would not be able to freeze or reschedule or refund your missed sessions.

  • You can sign up for the same course. The 9-week intermediate course is designed for students who are looking to practice and create. Many hours of practice and lots of patience are required to improve and master your skills. Persistence is the key to success.
