Saturday Pottery Wheel Throwing Taster

£75.00
Date:

Saturdays, 10.00am – 12.00pm

Suitable for: Complete beginners

This two-hour workshop introduces the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing in a professional ceramics studio. Designed for beginners and those with some previous experience, the session combines demonstration with individual tuition, allowing participants to develop an understanding of both the process and the material.

Working on the potter's wheel requires coordination, observation and repetition. Rather than focusing on producing a perfect piece, the workshop introduces the techniques that underpin all wheel-thrown ceramics and provides a solid foundation for further study.

Classes are taught in small groups, allowing time for individual guidance throughout the session.

What you will learn

  • Preparing clay for throwing

  • Setting up your wheel and working position

  • Centring the clay

  • Opening and forming a vessel

  • Pulling and refining the walls

  • Controlling shape, proportion and thickness

  • Creating simple bowl and cylinder forms

Alongside practical instruction, you'll begin to understand how clay responds to pressure, speed and moisture, and how these elements influence the final form.

What's included

  • Two hours of tuition

  • Individual pottery wheel

  • Up to 5kg of clay

  • Use of professional studio tools

  • Apron

Glazing and firing are available as an optional additional service.

Continue Learning

For those wishing to develop their skills further, this workshop provides an ideal introduction to our longer wheel throwing courses.

Please note this workshop is designed for adults (18+) only.
