This three-day masterclass explores throwing and shaping techniques, with a particular focus on creating tall, balanced forms with controlled curves and narrow necks.

The masterclass will be led by ceramic artist Cosmin Ciofirdel, whose practice centres on wheel-thrown vessels and an ongoing exploration of form, proportion, rhythm and surface. Discover more about Cosmin and his work →

Working over three consecutive days allows time to explore each stage of the process in greater depth. Through demonstrations, guided practice and individual support, participants will develop greater control when building height, shaping and refining curves, narrowing the neck and establishing well-balanced proportions.

The process will begin with throwing taller cylinders and establishing a strong, well-proportioned foundation from which more complex vessel forms can develop. From there, participants will explore how to create generous, continuous curves, control the transitions between different areas of the vessel and gradually collar and narrow the form while maintaining balance and control.

Alongside the technical process, the masterclass will consider the importance of observation and refinement, looking closely at the relationship between height, volume, neck and profile, and how subtle adjustments can influence the balance, rhythm and character of the finished form.

What you will explore

•⁠ ⁠Building taller forms — Develop greater control when throwing taller cylinders and establish a strong, well-proportioned foundation for more complex vessel forms.

•⁠ ⁠Creating and refining curves — Explore techniques for shaping generous, continuous curves and controlling the transitions between different areas of the vessel.

•⁠ ⁠Narrowing the neck — Learn how to gradually collar and narrow taller forms while maintaining balance and control, creating more defined and elegant profiles.

•⁠ ⁠Proportion, rhythm and form — Consider the relationship between height, volume, neck and profile, and how these elements can be adjusted to create a visually balanced vessel.

•⁠ ⁠Developing your own forms — Use the techniques introduced throughout the masterclass as a starting point for experimentation, with time to develop your own interpretation and receive individual guidance.

The masterclass is suitable for different levels of experience, provided you are comfortable throwing a reasonably sized cylinder independently.

Firing & glazing

The masterclass does not include a separate glazing session. Work made during the three days can be glazed and fired by the studio in a choice of glossy transparent, glossy white or matte white glaze.

Register your interest

We are currently inviting expressions of interest for this masterclass. No payment is required at this stage.

A minimum of five participants is required for the masterclass to go ahead. Once five participants have registered their interest, we will contact everyone who has registered and issue invoices. Places will be confirmed upon payment.

If the minimum number of participants is not reached, the masterclass will not go ahead and no payment will be required. We will keep everyone who has registered their interest updated as the date approaches.
