One-Day Pottery Wheel Throwing Class

£155.00
Date:

Saturdays, 10.00am – 3.00pm

Suitable for: Complete beginners

This one-day workshop provides a practical introduction to wheel throwing through five hours of demonstration, making and individual tuition. Designed for complete beginners, it offers sufficient time to move beyond a first attempt at the wheel and begin understanding the sequence of techniques used to make functional pottery.

Working in a small group of no more than eight participants, each student has the use of an individual pottery wheel throughout the day.

What you will learn

The workshop follows the stages used in professional studio practice, introducing the fundamental principles of wheel throwing:

  • Preparing clay for throwing

  • Centring the clay

  • Opening and establishing the base

  • Pulling and compressing the walls

  • Controlling height, thickness and proportion

  • Refining the profile of a form

  • Producing simple vessels such as bowls, cylinders and cups

Alongside practical instruction, attention is given to understanding why clay behaves as it does on the wheel, enabling participants to recognise common problems and correct them through technique rather than chance.

Teaching

The workshop is led by ceramic artist Cosmin Ciofirdel, whose teaching places equal importance on technical precision, careful observation and an understanding of material. Demonstrations are followed by individual guidance, allowing each participant to work through the process with close support where required.

What's Included

  • Five hours of tuition

  • Individual pottery wheel

  • Clay and all studio materials

  • Professional pottery tools

  • Apron

  • Bisque firing of one selected piece

Glazing and glaze firing are available separately for those wishing to complete their work.

Continue Learning

For those wishing to develop their practice further, the workshop provides an excellent preparation for our longer wheel throwing courses, where techniques are explored in greater depth over several weeks.

Please note this workshop is designed for adults (18+) only.

Before booking, kindly read our Terms and Conditions.
