You will be encouraged to come with a subject idea and supported through your making to a final piece. Create sculptural artworks without an inner armature structure and learn how to structure your idea from inspiration to reality. Build three-dimensional ceramics sculptures using various techniques like pinching, coiling, slabbing and straightforward hand building will be used in conjunction with basic decorative finishes.
This class encourages personal development and has a strong emphasis on exploitation of clay. As the intent of this course is to produce sculptural work, you will be encouraged to involve the imaginary and be creative playing and developing your own way of creating an individual and vibrant piece of art.
Complete beginners are welcome, but we strongly recommend that you take the One Day Pottery Workshop before attending this class.
Clay, glazes, and firings are included.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEND THIS CLASS?
This class is small, so your teacher is able to offer you full support and access to the studio facilities. Classes must be booked in advance; each class is run in a group of maximum 6 people.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THIS CLASS?
You will be encouraged from the beginning to come with a subject idea, and you will be supported through your making to a final piece. Our tutor will take you through a journey of mixed hand building techniques in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each technique will be introduced and explained at the beginning of each class. On the fifth week you will get to glaze your sculpture.
WHEN WILL MY WORK BE READY TO PICK UP?
After you glaze your artwork, it needs to go back into the kiln for a final firing. Please note that it may take up to 2 or 3 weeks until you can actually collect your artwork. You will be notified by email once it's ready for collection.
Kindly note we will keep hold of your artwork made at the studio for 14 days after artwork collection email confirmation. You must claim and collect your artwork within this time frame, otherwise, it will be donated to our local charity.
WHAT CLAY AM I GOING TO USE?
You are going to use a plastic, smooth Pale Buff stoneware clay. This clay body recipe is a blend of selected low iron clays providing an ideal background for a decorative approach to stoneware ceramics. Silica sand makes it excellent for throwing on the pottery wheel too.
This clay firing range is 1120°C - 1280°C.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING WITH ME?
You will work with clay so it will get messy; please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We also advise you not to wear jewellery like rings, bracelets or watches during the class as the clay may get into bits where it cannot be easily removed or they may get scratched.
ONCE I'VE FINISHED, WHAT CLASS CAN I DO NEXT?
If you want to learn more and refine your ceramics sculpture techniques, we suggest to sign up for another five weeks sculpture class or you can also apply to become a member as long you are responsible in the studio and can work unattended.
